Hello Microdot, I remember the song “Theme for an Imaginary Western” being done my Mountain. This was before West, Bruce, and Laing’s album. Leslie West, Jack Bruce and Laurence “Corky” Laing. Jack Bruce was of course the bass player with Eric Clapton in the group “Cream.” Felix A. Pappalardi was the original bass player with Mountain but also has to his credit as being the producer and collaborator of “Cream.”
Pappalardi produced the Cream albums. He and Bruce were very good friends. "Theme" was on Jack Bruce's second solo record, Songs For A Tailor. I was always very influenced by Jack Bruce. A true artist who walked outside of the mainstream, and was always at his very best when he undertook projects and collaborated with artist and composers who were truly avant garde. Most of his greatest work is relatively unknown. His work with the Tony Williams Lifetime Band...one of the first truly fusion Jazz Rock ensembles...as well as Free Spirits with Larry Coryell and Mitch Mitchell... Escalator Over The Hill, Carla Bleys visionary Jazz Rock Opera...his work with Michael Mantler singing Mantlers version of No Answer by Samuel Beckett... His own unceasing flow of solo releases.... I was so pleased with myself when I figured out his bass part to "Life On Earth"....I still play it to remind myself that great bass guitar requires many instantaneous and instinctive decisions..a as well as some kind of skill. A force to be reckoned with even today....
